The second commit log is confusing.  It's say that since pc-i440fx-2.6
is not avaible on stretch, the heuristic, introduced by the first
commit, should only be apply on stretch.  Those statements are in
contraction and form an anti-thesis.

The current implementation changes MACHINE to pc-i440fx-2.6 only if
inside vmware on stretch.  Is this the desired behavior?

Also, I don't see how I can find out if this work for buster or not.  I
would need to test it from inside vmware no?
